The Philosophy Forum is a discussion group for members of the LGBT community and SOFFAs (significant others, family, friends & allies). Over the course of more than a decade, we have discussed works from the canon of Western philosophy, texts of Asian philosophy, post-structuralist and contemporary philosophy, and non-philosophic texts — including literary texts — from the perspective of philosophy. We meet in Manhattan every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 4-6 p.m.
It is not easy for the western mind—accustomed to its Spinoza, Schopenhauer, Sartre, Hegel, Nietzsche, and so on— to determine whether yoga is, or is not a philosophy. This group is dedicated to providing a place for people interested in exploring the ancient, pre denominational spiritual path that was lived by the Saints of ancient Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Britain. The church was deeply contemplative, mystical, and monastic, but also socially conscious and active in the needs of its local communities. There was a strong eco …

The 19th century brought a time of great experimentation in religious expression in the Western world. The Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries had permanently changed the intellectual landscape. If miracles were being performed, it was the natural philosophers not the religious authorities who were bringing them to the public. To many of the period, a gauntlet had been thrown down. Prove that religion was more then idle superstition or step aside and let the "light of progress" cast awa …
… Meditation has been practiced since antiquity as a component of numerous religious traditions, especially, in Western countries, in monastic settings. In the Eastern spiritual traditions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, meditation is more commonly a practice engaged in by many, if not most, believers.
